Son of an Air Force instructor and German mother. Moved around the United States and Germany until his 20th birthday. Finished college at the University of Texas in 1992 with an Economics degree. Became a sound designer and composer for two game companies from 1992-1998, and since 1999 has been a Web designer for the largest computer manufacturer in the world.
Joined Touch Gallery with Lance Kinney in 1987 as a guitarist, and became the lead vocalist in 1988. The Touch Gallery recorded Ritual in 1990 and Trophy in 1991. Brian O'Halloran joined as guitarist in 1988, and drummer Dennis Merritt also joined in 1992. The band took a hiatus in 1994, and John formed Drowning Man in 1996 with Touch Gallery co-vocalist and guitarist Brian O'Halloran, recording several songs with long-time engineer Rod Nielsen of Big House Sound. Drowning Man played Austin venues until 1998. John, Brian, Lance and Dennis reformed as 139 in 2001.
